A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices:
for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!
- O Holy Night
G.K. Chesterton had much in common with many of the saints, but one virtue in particular connected him with every saint: hope. This hope was founded chiefly in the Incarnation, the mystery that “the Son of God became the Son of man so that man… might become a son of God” (CCC 460).
In the prayer for the intercession of G.K. Chesterton, we recognize that the Apostle of Common Sense had a life filled with “a hope which sprang from his lifelong gratitude for the gift of human life.” Chesterton’s approach to life was that of an adventure, an inconvenience rightly considered. And for the believer, the ultimate aim of that adventure is the eternal glory of Heaven. As we wait in joyful hope for the coming of Our Savior, Jesus Christ, let us approach Advent with open hearts, anticipating the thrill of seeing our Lord face-to-face.
